These were used to carry large shot which was loaded with the ball (“buck and ball”) to increase the effectiveness of the load. A few original lead shot remaining. Its thin form allowed it to be tucked in the belt or pouch. That it is not a shot container for fowling (shotgunning), is demonstrated by its very limited capacity. It would barely provide four to five charges for a shotgun but enough shot for perhaps 25 buck and ball loads. Untouched condition and complete with top torn as shown.
